Student insurance: what the consulate accepts and what it doesn't

Many students arrive with a "student" insurance policy bought online that the consulate or university then rejects. The difference is in the fine print: full coverage versus limited assistance.

Preguntas frecuentes

Dudas habituales sobre el students

Las preguntas que más nos hacen en la oficina, respondidas sin rodeos. Para cualquier otra, llámanos o pásate a vernos.

Does this insurance qualify for the student visa (Type D)?

Yes, this insurance is 100% valid for the Type D student visa. It meets every requirement the consulate checks: an insurer authorized to operate in Spain, coverage equivalent to the public healthcare system's service portfolio, no copays, no waiting periods, and medical repatriation included. The official certificate states all of this explicitly, point by point, so the official reviewing your application has nothing to object to, and you receive it guaranteed within 24 hours, in Spanish or English depending on what your consulate requires. The same insurance then serves to formalize your university enrollment and, every academic year, to renew your TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) with the immigration authorities, so you won't need to switch policies during your studies. If your consulate requires any specific wording on the document, let us know and we'll review it before issuing it.

I'm coming on Erasmus with a European Health Insurance Card, do I need this?

If you are an EU citizen with a valid European Health Insurance Card, for an Erasmus stay you typically don't need to take out mandatory private insurance. Even so, many European students get one voluntarily to avoid public healthcare waiting times and to have direct access to specialists, 24-hour video consultations and emergency care with no queues. The situation is completely different if you're coming from outside the EU: then private health insurance with no copays or waiting periods is mandatory to obtain the student visa and to renew your TIE every academic year. There are also in-between cases, such as long stays spanning several academic years or internships, where it's worth checking the fine print of your card. Tell us your specific situation and our office will confirm, free and with no obligation, whether you really need the policy or whether your European card already covers you.

Can I take out this insurance from my home country before traveling?

Yes, you can take it out from your home country before traveling, and in fact that's the usual process: the consulate requires the insurance before granting your visa, so the policy is arranged remotely with an effective date matching your arrival day in Spain. That way you don't pay for coverage on days you won't use and you land already insured, including for emergencies. The whole process is handled by email and video call, in Spanish or English, and you receive the official certificate as a PDF guaranteed within 24 hours to attach directly to your application. If your country's consulate requires the document in English or proof of the annual premium paid, we send that too. And if your parents prefer to handle it from your home country, we speak with them by WhatsApp or video call.

What happens when I renew my TIE next academic year?

To renew your student residence authorization you need to prove to the immigration authorities that you remain insured, under a policy that keeps the same terms: no copays, no waiting periods and full coverage. This is the step where most students get stuck, because the appointment arrives and last year's certificate no longer applies. Our system is simple: we notify you before the policy expires, renew it for the following academic year, and issue you the updated certificate guaranteed within 24 hours, ready for your immigration appointment. That way coverage stays continuous, with no gap between one academic year and the next, which is exactly what the official checks. It's the situation where having an office behind you, rather than an online policy, is most appreciated: a real person remembers your renewal for you.

Does it cover university sports and company internships?

Yes, medical care for injury or illness is covered across all of Spain, including injuries from non-professional sports and those arising during your curricular internship at a company. It doesn't matter whether the injury happens on campus, at the gym, or in another city where you're doing your internship: coverage is nationwide and doesn't depend on where you study. You would have specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency care and, if needed, hospitalization with no limit on days, all with no copays. Extreme sports and federated competition are the exception: they have specific terms, since they usually require a sports federation license with its own sports insurance. If you compete or practice any high-risk activity, ask us about your specific case before signing up and our office will tell you exactly what's covered and what isn't.

Can my parents manage the insurance on my behalf?

Yes, your parents can manage the insurance on your behalf, and in fact it's very common: in many cases they are the ones who take out and pay for the policy from your home country before the student travels to Spain. We speak with them by phone, WhatsApp or video call, in Spanish or English, explain the coverage and visa requirements, and answer their questions just as we would in our Majadahonda office. On the policy we list both the student and the family as contacts, so both of you receive the important notices: each academic year's renewal, the certificate for the TIE, or any pending paperwork. For many families, this is the greatest peace of mind in the whole process: knowing there's a physical office in Madrid, with real people, looking out for their child thousands of miles away.
