Sanitas's New Coverage for 2027 Explained One by One

Short answer: with the 2027 renewal Sanitas adds eleven new or extended types of cover to its health insurance plans, most of them in cancer care, complex surgery, mental health and sleep. They include robotic surgery for prostate and kidney tumours, TAVI to replace the aortic valve without open-heart surgery, psychiatric hospital care of up to 60 days a year and AutoCPAP for sleep apnoea, plus more precise genetic and imaging tests. Two caveats before you count on them. They only apply to you if they appear in the latest version of your policy's general conditions (with their limits and exclusions). And some come with a cost of your own, such as the valve for TAVI or the €7,000 contribution for robotic surgery. Below we explain each one in plain English, what the general conditions said until now and how to check yours in Mi Sanitas, the Sanitas customer area.

Comparison

What changes in 2027 compared with the current general conditions

The first column sums up each new feature as Sanitas presents it for 2027. The second shows what the general conditions of Sanitas Más Salud dated 3 October 2025 say today on the same point (the version that goes with those policies during 2026). Each plan in the range has its own general conditions, and some may differ in the details.

New features for 2027 according to the information Sanitas gave its customers (September 2026) and its public page on new coverage for 2027. Current general conditions column: general conditions of Sanitas Más Salud dated 3 October 2025 (sections 3.2.1, 3.8, 3.20, 3.23, 3.26, 3.30, 4.8 and 4.11 and the clause on excluded cover). The new features only apply to you if they appear in the most up-to-date version of your policy's general conditions, within their limits and exclusions.

The eleven new features, explained without jargon

We have grouped them by what they solve in everyday life. For each one we tell you what it is, who it helps and the detail worth knowing before you need it.

First, the caveat: they count once they are in your general conditions

Every year Sanitas tells its customers before renewal what it is adding to the insurance for the following year. It presented the new features for 2027 in September 2026. This is nothing unusual. For 2025 there were four, including fusion prostate biopsy and surgery for Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. For 2026 there were twelve, such as cardiac cryoablation, choline and PSMA PET-CT and speech therapy for children under 14. Those three already appear in writing in the general conditions of Sanitas Más Salud dated 3 October 2025. That is the normal path: a new feature becomes yours when it enters the text of the general conditions.

That is why Sanitas points out that this cover only applies to you if it appears in the latest version of your policy's general conditions, and always with the limits and exclusions they set. The general conditions provide for this themselves in their clause on excluded cover: techniques whose inclusion Sanitas notifies to the policyholder are included on the terms and within the limits of that notice. In everyday terms, the description of each new feature is a summary. What counts on the day you need it is the wording of your policy. At our office in Majadahonda we go through it with you.

Tests that sharpen the diagnosis: NGS, choline PET-CT and rapid prenatal testing

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) reads many genes at once and in a short time. Sanitas is adding it for two blood cancers that start in the bone marrow: acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. For both, the main clinical guidelines recommend it to classify the disease, choose the treatment and estimate the prognosis. It is a substantial change, because the current general conditions exclude genomic sequencing. In imaging, choline PET-CT is covered today for prostate cancer and for parathyroid adenoma before surgery. In 2027 it covers more cases: when conventional tests fail to locate that adenoma and in parathyroid adenocarcinoma. The parathyroids are tiny glands in the neck that regulate calcium, and before operating the surgeon needs to know which one is affected.

For pregnant women who need an invasive test (amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling) there is now rapid prenatal diagnosis. Today the general conditions cover the karyotype and screening for fetal DNA in the mother's blood, and they leave out any other genetic test. From 2027 QF-PCR or FISH on that sample is added. These tests count chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X and Y and pick up the most common abnormalities early, such as Down syndrome. They give a quick first result that guides the rest of the testing. Sanitas explains that this brings it into line with the criteria of the Spanish Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (SEGO). For a family waiting for news, getting that first answer sooner helps them decide calmly.

Breast cancer: wider access to BRCA testing, and biological mesh

The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the ones most closely linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. The current general conditions cover blood testing for them based on age and family history: for example breast cancer in a man, ovarian cancer or breast cancer before the age of 50. In 2027 two groups are added: multiple or bilateral breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer diagnosed before the age of 60. Knowing whether there is a mutation changes decisions. The general conditions already provide for preventive surgery with reconstruction when it is a treatment option after that result. Their criteria include anyone with a first-degree relative who carries the mutation. So one patient's result can open the test to her close relatives if they are insured too.

After a mastectomy, biological breast mesh is a material that holds the tissues in place and supports the implant. Today the general conditions cover reconstruction with expanders and implants or with your own tissue (latissimus dorsi flap, DIEP or TRAM), but biological meshes are not on their list of covered prostheses. With an expander there are usually two operations: first the skin is stretched, then the permanent implant is fitted. In selected patients the mesh lets the surgeon place the implant directly in the same operation and spares the second one. The surgical team decides who is a candidate, and it is usually done in specialist units.

Robotic prostate and kidney surgery: now in the policy, with a contribution from you

Until now the general conditions excluded any technique using robotic surgery equipment. For 2027 Sanitas is adding the multi-port robot (the one that operates with several arms through small incisions) for two specific operations: radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and partial nephrectomy when kidney cancer is suspected. Partial nephrectomy removes only the affected part of the kidney. According to Sanitas, these are the uses with the strongest scientific backing. The robot gives the surgeon more control and a better view of the operating field. In some cases it allows a less invasive operation and a faster recovery.

The caveat is financial, and Sanitas makes it clear: it is a service subject to a €7,000 PEG. PEG is the term Sanitas uses here for your share of the cost: the insured person pays €7,000 towards that surgery on top of the premium. Take a 63-year-old client with a localised prostate tumour. His urologist may offer him conventional surgery or the robot. The choice is medical and his own, but it is worth making it with that figure in mind. Before a date is set, we confirm with Sanitas the amount, when it is paid and exactly what your updated general conditions say.

Heart, spine and bile ducts: less invasive techniques for difficult cases

Severe aortic stenosis narrows the valve through which blood leaves the heart. The classic treatment is to replace it with open-heart surgery, but for some patients that operation is too risky. For them there is TAVI: the new valve is implanted through a catheter without open surgery, and recovery is faster. The current general conditions exclude percutaneous valve replacement. From 2027 the procedure is covered for patients with severe aortic stenosis who cannot have surgery because their surgical risk is too high. There is one clear condition: the insured person pays for the replacement valve. If your cardiologist suggests it, we ask Sanitas and the hospital for the price of the valve before anything is scheduled.

Neuronavigation works like a GPS for the surgeon: it shows in real time where each structure is. Today it is covered in intracranial surgery. From 2027 it is also covered in spinal operations on four or more vertebral levels, such as those for degenerative disease, spinal canal stenosis, instability or multiple herniated discs. There it helps place the implants precisely, and whether it is used depends on the assessment of each case. Advanced peroral cholangiopancreatoscopy (with systems such as SpyGlass or EyeMax) passes an endoscope through the mouth into the bile duct and the pancreatic duct. The doctor can see inside and treat in the same procedure. Sanitas is adding it for complex bile duct stones and bile duct strictures of unclear cause. The current general conditions did not include this technique.

Mental health and sleep: more days of hospital care, and AutoCPAP

Today psychiatric hospital care with an overnight stay is covered for acute episodes, up to 50 days per insured person per year. Day hospital is only provided for eating disorders after an inpatient stay. In 2027 the limit rises to 60 days a year, counting inpatient days and day hospital days together (in day hospital the patient is treated during the day and sleeps at home). Day hospital also opens up to psychosis, borderline personality disorder and severe depression. It is one combined allowance, not two: we explain it with an example in the questions below. Our article on mental health in Sanitas insurance (in Spanish) goes into psychology and psychiatry in depth.

In obstructive sleep apnoea the airway closes again and again while you sleep. CPAP prevents this by pushing air in at a fixed pressure. The current general conditions cover it but expressly leave out AutoCPAP. From 2027 this device is included too. It detects apnoeas, hypopnoeas or snoring and keeps adjusting the pressure to the minimum needed. Sanitas explains that it can make treatment more effective than fixed pressure. If you already use CPAP, talk to your respiratory specialist once your updated general conditions include it: the change of device is their decision.

How to check in Mi Sanitas whether your general conditions already include them

Your general conditions are in your private Mi Sanitas area (in the app and on the website), among your policy documents. When you open them, look at two things. The first is the date, which appears at the end of the document next to the signature area: the Más Salud version in force in 2026 is dated 3 October 2025. The second: search the text for the Spanish terms of the new features, such as “multiportal”, “autoCPAP” or “60 días”. If you still read that autoCPAP is not covered (“no es objeto de cobertura”) or that psychiatric hospital care stops at 50 days, you are looking at the previous version.

Look at the procedures too. Today the general conditions require prior authorisation from Sanitas with a medical report for PET-CT, genetic tests or breast surgery. It is worth checking what the new version asks for the new features. If you cannot find the document or are not sure which one applies to you, write to us: we check with Sanitas and tell you in writing what cover your policy has and from when.

If you sign up now: waiting periods, pre-existing conditions and what we review with you

The new features do not change the basic rules. In Más Salud, hospital stays and operations in groups III to VIII (Sanitas classifies surgery by complexity) have a 10-month waiting period, and complex diagnostic tests have a 6-month one, except in a life-threatening emergency. Conditions you already know about when you sign up are only covered if you declare them and Sanitas does not exclude them. Put plainly: if you have already been diagnosed with aortic stenosis, signing up today does not guarantee you TAVI. You have to declare it, Sanitas decides, and even then the waiting period for hospital care applies. If you are switching from another insurer, we ask Sanitas to waive your waiting periods because of your previous cover. Sanitas decides, and childbirth keeps its 8-month waiting period.

At our office in Majadahonda we go through it all before you sign: which version of the general conditions comes with your policy, from when the 2027 features apply and which plan includes them and which does not. Accede, Avanza, Único and Inclusivo have no hospital cover, so the features that need a hospital stay do not fit them. We also look at which waiting periods you would still have. You get it all in writing. For the exact price for your age and postcode there is the calculator on this website, and for everything else you can reach us at the office, by phone or on WhatsApp.

Comparison with the general conditions of Sanitas Más Salud dated 3 October 2025. The new cover only applies if it appears in the most up-to-date version of your policy's general conditions, within their limits and exclusions. Whether each technique is right for you is always a medical decision. We are an exclusive Sanitas agency, not the insurer: what is binding is the wording of your policy.

Common questions

Direct answers, the same we give at the office.

Do I need to request anything to get the new cover?

You do not need to buy it separately or ask for a supplement: Sanitas adds it to its health insurance through the general conditions. When your policy's general conditions are updated, what you need to do is check that the new cover appears there and with what limits. If renewal comes and you cannot see it, write to us: we check with Sanitas and explain whether your plan includes it.

How are the 60 days of psychiatric hospital care counted?

As a single yearly allowance that adds up inpatient days and day hospital days. If an insured person spends 15 days in hospital during a crisis and then continues treatment in day hospital for another 30 days, they have used 45 of the year's 60. Until now the limit was 50 days and only inpatient stays with an overnight stay counted. How it applies in your case is set by your updated general conditions.

Is robotic surgery covered for other operations, such as gynaecological or digestive surgery?

Not with what has been announced for 2027. The new feature is limited to radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and partial nephrectomy for suspected kidney cancer, with a multi-port robot and the €7,000 contribution. The current general conditions exclude all other robotic surgery. Unless the updated version says otherwise, those operations are done with techniques the policy already covers, such as laparoscopy.

How much will I have to pay for the TAVI valve?

Sanitas covers the procedure and leaves the cost of the replacement valve to the insured person. The amount is agreed with the hospital and depends on the valve to be implanted, so the right thing is to have it in writing before the operation is scheduled. If you get to that point, we help you request it and check with Sanitas exactly what your policy covers.

I have Sanitas Avanza. Do these new features apply to me?

Partly. Avanza does not include hospital stays, so the features that need one (such as TAVI, robotic surgery or psychiatric hospital care) do not fit it. Diagnostic tests depend on what Avanza's general conditions say, and they are different from those of Más Salud. If you want all of them, the next step is a plan with hospital cover. Before you switch, we ask Sanitas for the conditions in writing, waiting periods included.

Do they also apply to Más Salud Plus, Óptima, Familias or Profesionales?

Sanitas presents them as new features of its health insurance, and those plans share many of these clauses today. For example, the 50-day limit on psychiatric hospital care appears in the same terms in Plus, Óptima, Familias, Profesionales, Premium 500.000 and Más 90.000. Even so, each one has its own general conditions. It is your policy's general conditions that say whether the new feature is there and how far it goes.
