Sanitas pet insurance: what it really covers

Pet insurance is not for vaccines or the yearly check-up: you pay for those anyway, with or without insurance. It is for the day your dog breaks a leg in the park or your cat stops eating and the vet says "we need to operate". On that day the bill runs to 500, 1,500 or 3,000 euros, and that is the only reason Sanitas Salud Mascotas exists: you take your pet to the vet of your choice, anywhere in Spain, you pay, and Sanitas gives you back 80% of the bill, up to €2,500 a year, with no copays and no deductibles. That is how we explain it at the office, because it is what people need to understand before they look at the price. Here it is, in writing.

What you need to know

The key details explained without fine print, just as we explain them in the office.

  • 80% back, no fine print

You pay the bill and get 80% back, up to €2,500 a year, with no per-illness copays and no annual deductibles — conditions that a good share of pet insurers on the market do apply.

  • Keep your own vet

Total freedom of choice: any veterinary clinic or hospital in Spain, with emergencies also covered while travelling in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

  • Surgery and hospitalization, uncapped

Consultations, emergencies, hospitalization, surgery, medication from the vet and ambulance transport, all with no separate spending cap within the annual reimbursement: that €500–3,000 emergency stops being scary.

  • Tests and rehabilitation

Diagnostic tests (bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT, MRI) up to €1,000 a year, physiotherapy and rehabilitation with 5 sessions a year, and prosthetics and implants up to €200 a year.

  • Cover almost no one else offers

Treatment for obesity and arthrosis (chronic conditions, up to €1,000/year), allergies (€100/year) and a dog walker if your pet's owner is out of action: cover that's almost unheard of in the Spanish market.

  • Help beyond the clinic

24/7 veterinary phone advice (6 calls a year), pet boarding or a carer if you're hospitalised for more than 48 hours, early return from a trip, and euthanasia with cremation up to €500.

Comparison

Sanitas Salud Mascotas vs. other options

There are three ways to pay for the vet in Spain: reimbursement insurance, the wellness plans ("igualas") tied to a single clinic, and cheap policies with fixed discounted prices that leave out surgery and serious illness. This table compares what each option actually covers.

Common questions

Direct answers, the same we give at the office.

What exactly is reimbursement pet insurance for?

So that a large, unexpected bill does not make the decision for you. The small, predictable costs, vaccines, deworming, the annual check-up, you pay anyway, with or without insurance; the insurance comes into play when an illness or an accident appears: consultations, emergencies, tests, hospitalization and surgery. Sanitas Salud Mascotas works by reimbursement, which is the most flexible system: there is no closed list of clinics, you stay with the vet you already use, you pay their bill and Sanitas gives you back 80% up to €2,500 a year. There are no per-illness copays and no annual deductibles, two cuts that a good share of the pet insurance policies on the market do apply.

How do I claim the reimbursement? Is it complicated?

No. You go to the vet, pay as usual and ask for an invoice with the itemised charges. Then you submit it to Sanitas through the Mi Sanitas app, attaching the photo or PDF, and they pay 80% of the amount into your account. You do not need prior authorization for a consultation or an emergency, nor do you have to explain why you chose that clinic. The only limit is the annual ceiling of €2,500: above that figure the rest is on you, and within it there is no cap per treatment or per illness.

What does it cover that really makes a difference?

Three things that almost no Spanish pet insurer offers together. First, hospitalization and surgery with no separate spending cap within the annual reimbursement: that is exactly the €500 to €3,000 emergency people take it out for. Second, chronic conditions: treatment for obesity and arthrosis up to €1,000 a year, and for allergies up to €100, something most policies exclude outright. And third, the support around the animal: 24-hour veterinary advice by phone, boarding or a carer if you yourself are hospitalized for more than 48 hours, a dog walker in that case, and early return from a trip if your pet dies. On top of that, diagnostic tests (bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT, MRI) up to €1,000 a year and rehabilitation with five sessions a year. The full list is further down, exactly as it appears in the official product sheet.

What does it not cover? What you should know before signing up

Four clear points. Vaccines, deworming and the microchip, which are predictable costs (an annual preventive check-up of up to €50 is included). Illnesses or injuries that existed before enrollment, and congenital conditions: which is why it makes sense to insure your pet while it is young and healthy, before the first problem appears. Working, guard, hunting or competition dogs, and commercial breeding: this is insurance for companion animals. And your dog's civil liability: Sanitas Salud Mascotas covers the vet's bills, not the damage your dog might cause to other people; for that you need a separate policy, which we are happy to explain at the office.

When is the best time to take it out, and what are the requirements?

As early as possible, for two reasons: enrollment is only possible between 3 months and 9 years of age (after that the policy renews every year with no limit), and anything that appears before the pet is insured is excluded as a pre-existing condition. Your pet needs a microchip registered with your autonomous community's registry, which Spanish law requires anyway. And there is an initial waiting period of 30 days for veterinary care, and of 12 months for euthanasia and illness-related neutering: which is why there is no point waiting until the dog is ill to sign up.

And how much does it cost?

Less than a single operation. Cats have a single price, €49.95 a month, whatever the breed. For dogs the premium depends only on the breed, in three tiers: €45.58 a month for 27 breeds with lower veterinary costs (Yorkshire, Chihuahua, Beagle, Jack Russell or Border Collie, among others), €51.80 for mixed breeds and most breeds, from the Labrador to the German Shepherd, and €68.89 for 41 breeds with a higher incidence of joint and breathing problems, such as bulldogs, mastiffs, Boxers or Basset Hounds. Neither age nor province changes the premium, and if you are already a Sanitas client with another policy you get a €100 discount a year. On the calculator on this website you select the breed and see your exact price; and if you would rather talk it through, send us a WhatsApp message with the breed and date of birth and we will confirm it the same day.
