Almost every health insurer in Spain works with affiliated hospitals: they negotiate prices with centers that aren't theirs. Sanitas is one of the few that, on top of that, owns its own hospitals, and that changes concrete things the day you need surgery. Today it has five own hospitals in operation — La Moraleja, La Zarzuela, Virgen del Mar and Blua Valdebebas in Madrid, and CIMA in Barcelona — and has announced three more through 2029: Marina in Barcelona in 2027, Arganzuela in Madrid in 2028 and Portixol in Palma de Mallorca in 2029. What do I gain from the hospital being theirs rather than affiliated?
Three practical things, and none of them shows until the day you need them. The first is that you pay nothing and process nothing: you book an appointment, you go and you're seen, because the insurer and the hospital are the same house and billing is internal. There's no paying money upfront or claiming a reimbursement with invoices. The second is your medical record: whatever they do for you at an own hospital sits in the same system as your consultations and tests, so the specialist sees the CT scan you had two months ago without you having to bring a CD. And the third is that, when something gets complicated, the people deciding on your case and the people paying the bill aren't negotiating with each other. That said, we won't pretend the own network covers everything: some specialties and situations are referred to the affiliated network, and that happens at Sanitas too.
I live outside Madrid and Barcelona. Is any of this useful to me?
Honestly: today, not much. The five own hospitals are in Madrid and Barcelona, so if you live in Valencia, Seville or Bilbao you'll use the affiliated network just as with any other insurer, and this argument shouldn't weigh on your decision there. What does change the map in the medium term is that the upcoming openings step outside those two cities: Palma de Mallorca in 2029 with Hospital Portixol. Our advice when someone from elsewhere asks us is always the same: check the medical directory for which specific centers you have within twenty minutes of your home and decide based on that, not on the own hospitals. If you like, we'll look at it together with your postal code before you sign anything.
Which policy do I need to be treated at an own hospital?
You need a policy that includes hospitalization, and that's where the important detail lies: Sanitas Avanza doesn't include it. Avanza covers consultations, high-tech diagnostic tests and more than 400 procedures without hospital admission, but if you need to be admitted, it's not covered. The policies that give full access are those of the Más Salud family — in its three modalities: no copays, low copay and high copay — plus Más Salud Familias and the reimbursement products. For emergencies and consultations you can set foot in the hospital with almost any product; to spend the night there, you need hospitalization cover. If you're on Avanza and considering an upgrade, tell us and we'll request the terms of the change in writing before you sign.
Do Adeslas, DKV or Asisa have their own hospitals?
Here it pays to be precise rather than sell smoke. Adeslas and DKV have no hospitals of their own: they work with an affiliated network, and you can verify that in their own public information. Mapfre has around 16 medical centers of its own and an affiliated network of some 300 hospitals, but no university hospitals of its own. And Asisa does have a genuine own hospital network, the HLA group, with a solid presence in the Madrid region: on this specific row Asisa is comparable to Sanitas and we won't claim otherwise. If you're choosing between Sanitas and Asisa, the own-hospitals argument doesn't decide it; what decides it is which specific centers in each network are close to your home and which specialties they cover.
What exactly is Hospital Blua Valdebebas?
It's Sanitas' most recent own hospital, in Valdebebas (Madrid), and the company presents it as the most modern hospital in Europe: 100% digital, with the medical record and processes integrated into the app, and positioned as a benchmark in sustainability and clinical research. That "most modern in Europe" label is Sanitas', not ours, and that's how we pass it on to you. What our clients who've already been there do notice is the digital side: paperwork, access to results and follow-up are done from your phone instead of at a front desk. If you live in the Henares corridor or in the northeast of Madrid, it's probably the one closest to you.
The Arganzuela hospital opens in 2028. Does that change anything if I live in southern Madrid?
It could change quite a lot, because that's the area worst covered today by Sanitas' own network: the current five hospitals sit in the north, the west and the center. Hospital Sanitas Arganzuela will rise at Calle Retama 1, next to the M-30 and Méndez Álvaro station, with more than 110 beds, 24-hour emergency care, an ICU, 8 operating rooms and 50 consultation rooms spread across 19,500 square meters and thirteen floors, with an announced investment of €80 million. It will be the company's seventh hospital. Now, the prudent part: 2028 is a long way off and construction can be delayed. Don't sign up today on the strength of a hospital that doesn't exist yet; sign up for what's open now and take this as a signal of where the network is heading.
Does signing up through your office give me any advantage in accessing these hospitals?
No, and we prefer to say it plainly: access to the own hospitals depends on your policy, not on who sold it to you, and it's identical whether you sign up with us, at another Sanitas office or online. The premium is the same too, the one on the official rate card, with no surcharge for the advice. What does change is who picks up the phone when a test needs authorizing, a hospital document needs sorting out or a renewal needs lining up with an immigration appointment.
