Hospital Blua Sanitas Valdebebas: Oncology and Mental Health at Madrid's Newest Hospital

Published on August 22, 20266 minBy Daniela

When Sanitas presents the Hospital Blua in Valdebebas it speaks of "the most modern hospital in Europe", and that label, being its own, says little about what really matters: what they can treat you for there. That's why this guide focuses on the two areas we're asked about most at the office: medical oncology, with an onco-hematology day hospital, molecular diagnostics and access to clinical trials, and mental health, with its own Institute and 20 of the hospital's 110 rooms dedicated to it — something rare in Spanish private healthcare, where mental health tends to be the unfinished business. Everything you read here comes from the hospital's official website, linked at the foot of the article, and wherever something is a forecast or a commercial label, we flag it as such.

Common questions

Direct answers, the same we give at the office.

What do I need to be treated at Valdebebas?

A Sanitas policy that covers what you're going to need. For consultations and tests most of the company's products will do, but inpatient oncology treatments and mental health hospitalization require a policy with hospitalization cover: the Más Salud family in any of its modalities, Más Salud Familias or the reimbursement products. Sanitas Avanza doesn't cover hospitalization, so with Avanza you could have consultations and outpatient tests, but not an admission. As it's a Sanitas-owned hospital there are no reimbursements or upfront payments: you book an appointment, you go, and billing is internal. If you're not sure what your current policy covers, bring it to us and we'll tell you by reading the terms and conditions, not from memory.

What's special about its oncology compared with another private hospital?

Three specific things, according to what the hospital itself publishes. First, molecular diagnostics — NGS, liquid biopsy, FISH — which is what makes personalized medicine possible: knowing which specific mutation a tumor has in order to choose the targeted therapy instead of treating blind. Second, the onco-hematology day hospital, which means receiving your chemotherapy or immunotherapy in the morning and sleeping in your own home. And third, access to clinical trials at different phases, which in oncology can mean reaching treatments that aren't yet in the general portfolio. We say it with the caution it demands: the technology being available guarantees no outcome in any individual case, and the decision on any treatment always belongs to the medical team looking after the patient.

Is it true it has an inpatient mental health unit?

Yes, and it's one of the hospital's most distinctive features: the Mental Health Institute is one of its flagship units and 20 of the hospital's 110 rooms are dedicated to mental health. That matters because private psychiatric hospitalization in Spain is scarce: most insurers limit it to a few weeks a year and beds are not plentiful. If someone in your family has a diagnosis that may require admissions — severe depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders — this fact weighs more than any other row in the table. That said, review your policy first: psychiatric hospitalization cover has annual day limits in the terms and conditions, and we'd rather you know them before you need them.

Where is it, and who is it convenient for?

In Valdebebas, in the northeast of Madrid, next to the airport and the Ciudad de la Justicia. It's especially convenient if you live along the A-1 and A-2 corridors, in Hortaleza, Sanchinarro, Las Tablas or the Henares corridor. If you live in the west — our area: Majadahonda, Pozuelo, Las Rozas — your go-to own hospital will still be La Zarzuela in Aravaca or La Moraleja in the north, and that's fine: the beauty of the own network is that you can use any of the five. For oncology and mental health, besides, distance usually matters less than the specific unit: some patients cross Madrid for the team they trust.

Is all of this covered by any Sanitas policy?

No, and here's the fine print worth reading. Access to the hospital is one thing and the coverage of each treatment is another: oncology is covered in the company's full policies, but specific services have their conditions — psychiatric hospitalization has an annual limit on days, some treatments require prior authorization, and waiting periods apply if the policy is recent (6 months for hospitalization, unless you come from another insurer and they're waived). Our standing recommendation: if you're signing up with a specific need in mind, tell us and we'll show you the terms of that specific coverage before you sign. Better an uncomfortable conversation now than a surprise at the worst possible moment.

I'm not a Sanitas client. Can I use this hospital?

The hospital belongs to Sanitas and its natural route of access is a Sanitas policy, which is the scenario where everything runs without friction: appointment, treatment and internal billing. That said, if you're thinking of switching insurers precisely because of this hospital, one detail works in your favor: coming from another company with a certificate of your insured time, hospitalization waiting periods are normally waived, so you wouldn't be starting from zero. What you can't do is take out insurance after a diagnosis expecting it to cover that illness: pre-existing conditions are declared on the health questionnaire and the insurer can exclude them. If that's your situation, tell us about it frankly and we'll tell you what real options exist, even if the answer is that with us there isn't one.
