Mi Farmagen, Explained Without the Jargon

What pharmacogenetics is and why it affects you
Two people with the same prescription can react very differently to the same medicine: for one it works first time, for the other it causes side effects or does nothing at all. Part of that difference is written in the genes, in how each body absorbs, transforms and eliminates each drug. Pharmacogenetics is the branch of genetics that reads that information and turns it into a practical recommendation for the doctor: which drug and which dose are most likely to work for you.
It is not a laboratory curiosity. Sanitas points out that one in twenty hospital admissions is due to adverse drug reactions, and a good share of them could be avoided by knowing in advance how each patient metabolizes medicines.
What exactly it analyzes
Mi Farmagen studies 29 genes and cross-references the result with more than 120 commonly used medicines from different specialties: anti-inflammatories, stomach protectors, antidepressants, anticoagulants and painkillers, among others. Sanitas’s own example is easy to follow: some people metabolize a stomach protector so quickly that the standard dose barely works for them; with the report in hand, the doctor knows before prescribing it and chooses another one or adjusts the dose.
It is worth being clear about what it does not do: Mi Farmagen does not diagnose illnesses or predict the risk of developing them. Sanitas has other programs within its Mi ADN line for that; this one is only about medicines.
What you receive and how it is used
The result is a detailed report on your response to those drugs, designed to be shared with the professionals who treat you. It is yours: it is valid for a doctor in the Sanitas network and for one outside it, and the most useful thing is to take it to the consultation when you are about to be prescribed something new or when a treatment is not working as it should.
Your genetic variants do not change over the years, so the report remains useful over time. What does evolve is the list of drugs science has studied, and Sanitas will expand it over time; when it does, we will let you know.
How it is activated and what it costs
Mi Farmagen sits within the cover of the health insurance and is activated from the Mi Sanitas app with a single copay. In this year’s renewal letter, Sanitas presents it to its policyholders as a new feature: a new pharmacogenetics cover within Blua, its digital health service.
In the year-end promotion, new individual and self-employed enrollments with an effective date from 1 November 2026 get it as a gift: the single copay is not charged. If you are already a client, you can activate it from the app all the same, with its copay. At the office we walk you through the activation on the day of enrollment.
What the process looks like
Activation is done from the Mi Sanitas app in a few guided steps: the app itself shows you how the sample is collected and notifies you when your report is available. Who gets Mi Farmagen as a gift?
New enrollments under the Sanitas year-end promotion: individuals and self-employed people who take out a new health policy with an effective date from 1 November 2026, with activations and enrollments from 15 October. In those cases the program’s single copay is not charged. If you are already a Sanitas client, you can activate it from the Mi Sanitas app all the same, with its copay; the gift is for the campaign’s new policies, and the campaign runs until 1 February 2027.
Does Mi Farmagen detect illnesses or the risk of developing them?
No, and it is important not to confuse the two. Mi Farmagen does not look for illnesses or predispositions: it studies how your body processes medicines. It is a tool to help the doctor get the drug and the dose right sooner, not a diagnosis. Sanitas has other programs within its Mi ADN line, but this article is only about Mi Farmagen, which is the one that comes free with the promotion.
How is the test done and how long does the result take?
It is activated from the Mi Sanitas app, which guides you step by step through collecting the sample, and the result is a detailed report that stays available to you in the app itself to share with your doctor. On the day of enrollment we walk you through the activation and, if you have any question about timings or the procedure, we sort it out directly with Sanitas.
Can any doctor use the report, or only Sanitas doctors?
Any doctor. The report is yours and is designed to be shared with the professionals who treat you, whether in the Sanitas medical network or outside it. In practice, the useful thing is to take it to the consultation when you are about to be prescribed a new medicine or when a treatment is not working as it should.
Does it cover the whole family or only the policyholder?
Mi Farmagen is activated per insured person, because each person has their own genetic variants: a parent’s report is no use to their child. Under the promotion, the gift applies to the new enrollments on the policy, so if you are insuring several people it is worth asking us about each one. We tell you with the policy in front of us before you sign up, so nobody counts on something they are not entitled to.
Why is Sanitas giving it away now?
Because it fits what the company has been advocating for years: using insurance to prevent, not just to cure. Sanitas stresses that one in twenty hospital admissions is due to adverse drug reactions, and a test that helps avoid those reactions saves the patient suffering and the system costs. For you, the timing is good because it coincides with the time of year when most people switch insurance ahead of the January renewal.
Does Mi Farmagen change the price of the insurance or the waiting periods?
No. The premium of your health insurance is the official Sanitas price for your age, your postcode and your plan, and you can work it out in a minute in our calculator. The waiting periods depend on the product and on whether you come from another insurer, not on the program. Mi Farmagen is a gift added to the promotion’s new policy; we confirm the campaign’s special terms when we speak with you, because they depend on the product and the effective date.
