Sanitas in the Canary Islands: Where You Are Treated on Each Island

Short answer: in the Canary Islands Sanitas treats you through its partner network on each island. There are private hospitals such as San Roque, Vithas Las Palmas or Perpetuo Socorro in Gran Canaria, Hospiten Rambla, Quirónsalud Tenerife or Hospiten Bellevue in Tenerife, Hospiten Lanzarote and Hospital Parque Fuerteventura. In La Palma and La Gomera the network is made up of medical centres. Sanitas's own hospitals are in Madrid and Barcelona. On the islands, what belongs to the company itself are the Sanitas dental clinics in Las Palmas and Santa Cruz. And wherever you are, you have the 24-hour video consultation in Mi Sanitas. Here it is island by island, with what is worth knowing before an admission or before taking a ferry for a test. We also explain how to take it out remotely with Oficina Sanitas Majadahonda (an exclusive Sanitas agency).

The Sanitas network in the Canary Islands, island by island

The centres we name are the ones Sanitas highlights for each island in its information for the 2027 renewal campaign (September 2026). They are not all of them. We checked their location, and whether each is a hospital or a medical centre, on each centre's website on 23 October 2026. The medical directory changes during the year: before booking, confirm it in the Mi Sanitas app or with us.

Gran Canaria: the capital and the south

Several of the hospitals and clinics that Sanitas lists as the main ones on the island are in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They are Hospital Universitario San Roque (Calle Dolores de la Rocha 5), Vithas Las Palmas (formerly Hospital Santa Catalina), Hospital Perpetuo Socorro (León y Castillo 407, with 24-hour emergencies) and Clínica Nuestra Señora del Carmen. In the south the main options are in two places. One is Hospital Universitario San Roque Maspalomas in Meloneras. The other is Hospiten Roca in San Agustín, also with 24-hour emergencies.

For the weekly visit to the family doctor or the paediatrician there is Grupo Gomermedi, with practices in several towns on the island. Diagnostic, ophthalmology, cardiology, laboratory and physiotherapy centres complete the Sanitas network in Gran Canaria. And here Sanitas does have its own network for the dentist: two Sanitas dental clinics in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, at Calle Fernando Guanarteme 86 and at León y Castillo 70. A tip we give everyone who signs up: save the centre with an emergency department closest to your home in the app before you need it. A night with a fever is not the time to look for it.

Tenerife: Santa Cruz, the north and the south

In Tenerife the network is spread across the whole island. In Santa Cruz there are Hospiten Rambla, Hospital Quirónsalud Tenerife, Vithas Tenerife (formerly Hospital Santa Cruz) and Hospital Parque Tenerife (Méndez Núñez 40). In the north there is Hospiten Bellevue in Puerto de la Cruz, with 24-hour emergencies. The Sanitas list also includes Clínica Tara. If you live in the south or spend the winters there, you have Hospital Quirónsalud Costa Adeje and Family Doctors in Adeje.

For day-to-day care there are the Quirónsalud Vida centres and Grupo Gomermedi. Diagnostic centres in Santa Cruz and La Laguna, Centro Médico Palmar, Centro Médico Elite and Clínica Mirabell complete the selection. At Rambla de Pulido 16 in Santa Cruz is the province's Sanitas dental clinic. If you choose your plan with us from Tenerife, we start with the same thing as in any province. We locate a hospital with an emergency department in your area and check that your trusted specialist is in the network. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of surprises.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: one main hospital and practices around the island

In Lanzarote the hospital Sanitas highlights is Hospiten Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen. For consultations and tests there is Centro Médico Parque Lanzarote in Arrecife, among others. Before booking an appointment for an unusual specialty, check in the medical directory which centre covers it. If it is not on the island, it is better to know before booking the flight than in the waiting room. We look it up with you using your postcode while we prepare the policy.

In Fuerteventura the hospital is Hospital Parque Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario. Practices are spread across the island: Centro Médico Fuerteventura, the CEM centres in Gran Tarajal and Jandía, Cenmed in Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma and Morro Jable, and Grupo Gomermedi. Say it is a Sunday in Corralejo and a child has a fever. Before getting in the car, request a paediatric video consultation in the app, which Sanitas offers 24 hours a day. The doctor will tell you whether what they prescribe is enough or whether you need to go to a centre, and which one.

La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro: what's close on the island, the rest well organised

In La Palma the Sanitas selection includes three medical centres (Sermeva, Tinabana and Atensa) and the Red Canaria de Laboratorios for lab tests. In La Gomera it includes Grupo Gomermedi. El Hierro is not on that list. If you live there, the first thing is to look up with your postcode what you have on the island. We do it with you by phone before you sign up. On these islands the selection is medical centres: the hospitals are in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

In practice your weekly consultation is close by. For a test or an admission that is not available on your island, the Sanitas Más Salud general terms and conditions provide that the service is given in the province where it can be done, at your choice. The ferry or the flight is at your own expense, because the general terms and conditions exclude travel expenses except the ambulance we explain below. That's why it is worth organising. Results can be reviewed by video consultation, and before you travel we help you fit the test and the consultation into a single trip.

Video consultation: the doctor who doesn't depend on the ferry

Blua is Sanitas's digital health service and it works the same in Garafía as in Madrid. From Mi Sanitas you have emergencies and immediate medical consultations 24 hours a day, in general medicine and paediatrics. You also have video consultations with specialists for whatever can be treated that way. If needed, the doctor prescribes or orders tests and you find them in the app. According to Sanitas's September 2026 data, in the last year there were nearly a million digital consultations, with 3,600 professionals from its medical directory connected in more than 36 specialties. On an island that means being able to consult a specialist who is far away and share your test results, even to ask for a second opinion.

Two nuances to use it well. According to the general terms and conditions, video consultation does not replace an in-person consultation and the doctor may ask you to come in. And not all digital services are included in every policy, so we go over the ones in yours when you sign up. There are two that are especially useful on a small island. Cuida tu mente is for mental and emotional health, with digital therapies and consultations with professionals. Fisio Digital brings together more than 1,200 exercises, corrects your movements in real time with your phone's camera and lets you follow a rehabilitation programme with professional follow-up.

If you are admitted or need an ambulance

For neurosurgery, cardiac surgery or spinal surgery, the general terms and conditions provide that Sanitas designates the centre and the professionals in advance. It is worth knowing early in case they are on another island. In an emergency, go to the emergency services in the medical directory or call the 24-hour phone line you have in the app. If it is a life-threatening emergency and you end up in a hospital outside the network, notify Sanitas as soon as possible. That way it can move you to a partner hospital as soon as your condition allows.

The ambulance covers the transfer to the hospital where you are admitted or where you go for an emergency, and the return home. It also covers the transfer to another hospital in the network when yours doesn't have the resources you need, and chemotherapy or radiotherapy in a day hospital. It always travels by road and within Spain, authorised through the 24-hour phone line and when you cannot go by taxi or car. It does not include transfers for consultations, tests or physiotherapy.

Foreign residents on the islands: insurance for the paperwork and for everyday life

If you come from another country to live in the Canary Islands, all year round or for part of it, the first thing is to know what you need the insurance for. For a visa or a residence permit there is Sanitas Residents Visado. According to its general terms and conditions it is designed to meet the rules for visas and residence permits in Spain. It gives full cover throughout Spain with a medical directory, without waiting periods and with a minimum term of one year. It can be taken out up to age 75. Sanitas issues the certificate for the consulate or the immigration office (Extranjería) in under 24 hours, guaranteed (up to 48 hours if there are pre-existing conditions or you pay by bank transfer).

If you already have residence and are looking for insurance for everyday life, the Sanitas Más Salud range gives you the same island network you have seen above, with or without copays. In both cases everything is done remotely. Before you sign up we check with you that the product fits your application. We look after you in eight languages: Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese. When you land, the card will already be in your app and your adviser on the other end of WhatsApp.

Signing up from the Canary Islands with the Majadahonda office

The office is in Majadahonda and many of our clients have never set foot in it. The policy is from Sanitas and the medical directory covers the whole of Spain. You work out your price with your postcode and message us on WhatsApp at +34 655 02 69 85 (every day) or call us on +34 919 93 17 90. We answer the phone Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00 and on Fridays from 9:00 to 15:00, mainland Spain time: in the Canary Islands it is one hour earlier. You can also write to us at ventas@protegesalud.com or go through it with us by video call. With complete paperwork, sign-up usually takes under 12 hours and sometimes happens within the hour. The policy always starts on the 1st of a month.

What changes is what comes afterwards. Authorising an MRI, adding the baby who has just been born or requesting the certificate to renew your residence card is handled by the same person who set up your policy. If you come from another insurer that operates in Spain, we ask Sanitas on your behalf to waive the waiting periods, which the company assesses case by case (Sanitas Residents does not accept this transfer). The price starts from the Sanitas rate and with us you never pay more. On full health insurance plans (with hospitalisation) we also apply the best price guaranteed. The same people always look after you on WhatsApp and by phone. We are not the ones saying it: 430 client reviews on Google say it, with a 5.0 rating.

Partner hospitals and centres according to Sanitas's information for its 2027 renewal campaign (September 2026). Location and type of centre checked on each hospital's website on 23 October 2026. Sanitas dental clinics checked on Sanitas's websites on the same date. The medical directory changes during the year: before you go, confirm it in the Mi Sanitas app or with us. The 2027 cover only applies if it appears in the latest version of your policy's terms and conditions, within its limits and exclusions. What your policy covers is what its general terms and conditions say (Sanitas Más Salud and Sanitas Residents Visado in this article). Common questions

Direct answers, the same we give at the office.

Does Sanitas have any hospital of its own in the Canary Islands?

Not today. Sanitas's five own hospitals are in Madrid (La Moraleja, La Zarzuela, Virgen del Mar and Blua Valdebebas) and in Barcelona (CIMA). Its own medical centres are on the mainland and in Palma de Mallorca. In the Canary Islands medical and hospital care comes through each island's partner network. What belongs to the company itself on the islands is the dentist, with the Sanitas dental clinics in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If you travel to the mainland and your policy includes hospitalisation, you also have the Sanitas medical directory there, with its own hospitals.

How much does Sanitas cost in the Canary Islands?

It depends on the age of each insured person, the plan with or without copays, the number of people and the area. That's why what a relative pays in Madrid is no reference for you, and we don't give a starting figure that later looks nothing like yours. In our calculator you enter your postcode and the age of each insured person and you see your price in a minute. The price starts from the Sanitas rate and with us you never pay more. On full health insurance plans (with hospitalisation) we also apply the best price guaranteed.

I'm moving to the Canary Islands from the mainland. Do I need a new policy?

There's no need: your Sanitas policy is valid throughout Spain and on the islands you will use the network in your new area. What you must do is report your new address. The general terms and conditions require you to notify it in a verifiable way at least eight days before requesting any home service. Those services are provided in the towns where Sanitas has them under contract. If you are our client, we process it with Sanitas and confirm whether anything changes in your premium and which centres are closest to your new home.

Can I sign up from Lanzarote or La Palma with an office in Majadahonda?

Yes, without leaving home. You work out your price on the website and message us on WhatsApp, call us or go through it by video call. With the signed application and your DNI, NIE or passport we process the sign-up: with complete paperwork it usually takes under 12 hours and sometimes happens within the hour. Mind the time difference: we answer the phone Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00 and on Fridays from 9:00 to 15:00 mainland Spain time, one hour earlier in the Canary Islands. You can write to us on WhatsApp whenever you like.

Does the new 2027 cover apply the same way in the Canary Islands?

Cover depends not on the island but on the general terms and conditions. If the latest version of your policy's terms and conditions includes it, you have it in Las Palmas just as in Madrid, within its limits and exclusions. Among the new features Sanitas announces for 2027 is psychiatric hospitalisation extended from 50 to 60 days a year, counting admission days and day-hospital days together. There is also TAVI for severe aortic stenosis when surgery is contraindicated because of high surgical risk, in which the insured person pays for the valve prosthesis. And multiport robotic surgery arrives for prostate and kidney cancer procedures, with its own conditions. Before a procedure like that we check it with Sanitas for your policy.

I spend time away from the Canary Islands. Does my policy work on the mainland or in my home country?

On the mainland, yes: the Sanitas medical directory covers all of Spain. Outside Spain, the Sanitas Más Salud general terms and conditions include emergencies due to illness or accident during the first 90 consecutive days of each trip, up to €12,000 per person per year. They are treated at the centres Sanitas designates and with prior authorisation through the phone number on your card. In a life-threatening emergency you go to the nearest hospital and report it within a maximum of 7 days. It does not cover an illness you already knew about before leaving, except for an unforeseeable complication, nor treatments prescribed in Spain. And to keep the policy you must live in Spain for at least six months a year: if you are going to spend more time away, tell us beforehand.
